Defy Advanced 1
Weight: 16.1 lbs
MSRP: $3550 3.8 stars (5 reviews)Bicycling Review
Issue: Jun 2009
Page: 88 Editorial Review
With the Defy Advanced 1, Giant solved the paradox of making a bike comfortable while maintaining an extremely aggressive feel. It can bomb a rough dirt road without beating you up, then sprint for a city-limit sign a mile later. This Defy has Giant's top tech, including the BB86 oversize bottom bracket and tapered steerer with integrated headset, and it shows in the bike's performance. Plus, it weighs nearly a pound less than the other finalists. Cervelo's RS Ultegra SL is zippy and highly responsive, yet testers felt its wheelset was a step behind those of the others. And the Specialized, an improvement over previous Roubaix models, is perhaps the most stable performance bike available. But our winner stood out for its balanced attributes and raises the bar for the category higher than ever before.

Light, responsive, compliant, and a very good riding position make this a terrific bike for long, hard rides. This bike almost flew through a recent century ride, and I was comfortable the whole trip. Just the right amount of upright riding position - not too much where the body acts like a sail, and not too little as to be over agressive. And the new version of the full Ultegra system makes this a great value. I plan on putting on some Zipp 404's and this will make an excellent overall racing bike. I would definitely buy this again. Thought that the more "comfortable" angle would be a perfect foil for the Felt for less aggressive rides and inclement weather. Hasnt disappointed at all---in fact exceeded my expectations. Even with the taller head tube, and more upright position, still handles and feels like a race bike. Awesome on hills, and outstanding power transfer. Looks great, too, and the Giant workmanship is outstanding. Just an all-around super ride! (Report Abuse) Review By Rob, Rides for Fitness:I?ve been riding the Defy Advanced 1 for about a month now and I have to say it?s a dream bike. My first serious endeavor took me from Montreal to Quebec City (285km) as part of the Ride to Conquer Cancer and the bike was flawless in terms of comfort and responsiveness. On shorter faster rides the bike just makes me feel stronger, the power transition to the road is fantastic, I know this bike makes me feel like a better rider (even though I?m probably not). 10 out 10.
