DO-OVER: All new in 2009, this year's Defy 3 is nearly identical except for a few spec tweaks. The heavy, clunky adjustable-angle stem has been replaced with a sleek fixed-angle stem (the bar height is still adjustable by flipping the stem or altering the spacer stack); the brakes are upgraded and now feature cartridge pads; and the rear hub is now from Shimano. All this and it's $10 cheaper, too.

WE LIKE: Giant overhauled its road-bike line in 2009 and the results earned some loud cheers from this magazine. The Defy 3's big brother, the Defy Advanced 1, captured our Editors' Choice award in the plush category. The Defy 3 shares that bike's geometry and some features, such as the tapered head tube.

Star Rating: 4 Review By Jake, Rides for Fitness:
I bought this a week ago to replace my old Bianchi Brava and I am very happy. I took it out for a 10 mile spin after getting it home and found that it is leaps and bounds beyond what I was riding. Lighter frame, good saddle, easy handling and better control. I power up hills a lot easier and get much less vibration on fast downhills. The drawback I find is that in rapid shifting the chain came off twice on some more steep uphills. Other than that, its a great bike.

I just purchased the Defy 3 and I love it. It is very easy to pedal and has a very smooth ride. The only drawback I have noticed it the seat is hard and a little uncomfortable but I bought shorts with a thicker gel pad and that made a big difference!
